Unlocking AI for Animal Welfare Professionals: Watch the Recording

In case you missed my recent webinar on using AI in animal shelters and rescues, the recording is now available! In this session, I teach you how to use a few of the most well-known LLMs, including Claude, Chat-GPT, and Gemini. After that, I share practical uses of AI for animal shelters. These include designing graphics, improving standard operating procedures, writing news releases, and building better meeting agendas.

The Frontlines of America’s Largest Shelters

These days, I’m spending much of my time with the Outcomes Consulting team in the Southern California area, where there is one of the highest concentrations of homeless pets in the nation. In my work with Los Angeles Animal Services and Riverside County Department of Animal Services, I experience firsthand the impacts of one shelter system taking in 30,000+ animals annually and housing more than 1,500 pets at any given time. In these shelters, highly adoptable puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats either get lost in the shuffle and wait for months to find a home or become at risk of euthanasia simply because there are more animals coming in than there are leaving. They need help and resources are available to transport animals to other areas of the country.

In these shelters, you can find a wide variety of pets, including puppies, small/medium dogs, kittens, purebreds, as well as turtles, bunnies, and guinea pigs. The photos below were taken at Riverside County Department of Animal Services last week. Tragically, this shelter is struggling to find homes for puppies, who are frequently 'growing up' in kennels. They are actively seeking transport partners now.

Why It Matters

As recent data from Shelter Animals Count shows, pet populations are highly concentrated into a small handful of animal shelters. On the other hand, 85% of shelters that report into SAC adopt out fewer than 500 animals annually. If we could more effectively distribute animals from these oversaturated areas, we could end needless euthanasia and the harm caused to people and animals in overburdened systems.

Why it Matters

If animal shelters and rescues get left behind in this current technological transformation, we will be unprepared to thrive in the increasingly competitive new pet acquisition market. Online puppy sales have made getting a new pet easier than ever and without AI, we risk losing potential adopters and fosters. We need to embrace AI solutions to inspire people to adopt shelter pets and donate, foster, and volunteer. This course will arm you with tools, resources, and knowledge, ensuring you and your organization are sustainable and secure in this time of massive change. As AI Expert Ethan Mollick says, "AI won't take your job, but someone using AI might"

As always, thanks for everything you do for pets and people in your community.
